Australia's captain Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of taking part.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, not only the back issue, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
