Around 50 vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they announced in a statement.
Police report they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued substance.
The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then located multiple other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement say early analysis suggest the substance was probably human bodily fluid.
"There is still no clue as to its source; authorities are not yet aware of any harm in relation with the event," they commented.
Municipal representatives stated they were working "to unravel the case" and have asked to the residents for information.
A high-ranking official said the incident left him speechless and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This incident affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right attack five years ago," he posted on online, mentioning the murder of nine people by a assailant focusing on individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
